Is Joy Just a Christmas Bug?

Hello friend,

So, the third week of December and just 7 more days left on the countdown! The Christmas aurora of excitement, secrets, and family celebrations is descending on us along with the falling snowflakes outside. Well…sort of. That’s sounds entirely way to romantic for us! A blizzard of activity is closer to the mark! 😉

That aside, I want to touch on a bug that everyone seems to catch around December 25 – and I don’t mean the flu. I mean the holiday excitement, the festive hipe, the…the…the Christmas JOY!!

Rousing Christmas carols, sweet aromas, twinkling lights, and rich colors send us all into a tizzy of anticipation. Jokes and laughter are constantly exchanged. Lively banter reigns.

Well…for now. Ten days after the Grand Finale, so-called New-Years-Day, everyone seems exhausted, worn out, and suffering from acute “January Blues”.

Some may think that Christmas joy is just that. An emotional hype that a person ride in ecstasy for approximately two weeks before crashing into dismal depression. A good old Christmas Scrooge would do well to quote Marilla Cuthbert in saying “I’d rather walk along calmly without flying and thud.” 😉 Hopeful, eh? Is Joy really just a Christmas bug?

Well, take a look at these beautiful words from King David, a man after God’s own heart.

“For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” – Psalms 107:9

“You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of JOY: at Your right hand are pleasure forevermore!” – Psalms 16:11

“The Lord will command His LOVINGKINDNESS to me in the daytime, and at night His song shall be with me.” – Psalms 42:8

“They looked to Him and were RADIANT, and their faces were not ashamed.” – Psalms 34:5

I just love those verses. So powerful. Every time I read them, I feel lifted out of the daily grind and JOY, yes, the real JOY sweeps over me. How amazing to think that God commands His loving-kindness to us all day and then gives us a song at night. Perpetual JOY! He generously satisfies our deep longing to be filled and with Him is fullness joy. Lasting JOY! Fulfilling JOY! When we fix our gaze on Him our faces with radiate with joy. Visible JOY!

Perpetual, lasting, fulfilling, and visible joy. Does that sound like a two-week fling to you? Not in my dictionary! “ReJOYce in the Lord always,” – definitely not possible on an emotional hype (and yes, I messed up the spelling to make that point)! Joy is perpetual, lasting, fulfilling, and visible to those around us. So must our rejoicing be. Our joy is from Him, is like Him, and is always pointed back to Him. Are you leaping for joy yet?

I could go on and on about joy. Joy isn’t circumstantial, it isn’t momentary, it isn’t dependable on others. But that will have to be for another time. For now, I pray that you will just press into Christ and as you go boldly before the Throne of Grace, tap into that JOY!!

So, instead of a holiday roller-coaster here is to a life-long Hallelujah chorus!

“I am come that they might have LIFE and life more ABUNDANTLY.” – John 10:10

“…For the JOY of the Lord is your strength” – Nehemiah 8:10

In Christ,
