When I was thirteen I discovered the beautiful world of poetry, and unfortunately I didn’t have much godly direction in this area. I found myself studying all sorts of classic poets who did me probably more damage than good. Poetry is an art that God has given us to beautify life! I would encourage you to find poetry in the right places; poetry brings delight, but what do you delight in when you read it?
I’m sure there are a lot of good Christian poets out there, but I’m not yet familiar with most of them. My treasure hunt found great satisfaction when I sang hymns on Sunday and discovered that yes…. most of my Christian friends who say they don’t like poetry actually do… and they sing it every Sunday! I love old hymns for the poetic grace they give in writing their soul’s worship to God. This is a poetry that has found the right thing to worship and sing praise of; this poetry is like King David’s in the Psalms.
So if you can manage to find any old hymnbook that’s so ratty your ready to toss it- save it! Read it’s refreshing lyrics and you’ll have a great start to the day! Maybe it will inspire you to write worshipful poetry yourself 🙂
